Parkinson’s and Dehydration – Why is it important?

Parkinson’s and Dehydration – Why is it important?

What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disease that affects the nervous system. It can start as a tremor in the hand and gradually, over time, progress to loss of automatic functions like smiling, blinking, or writing. Since symptoms vary from person to person, sometimes it can be hard to diagnose Parkinson’s.

Common symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include the following.

  • Tremor – Tremors can start in one side of the body with a targeted extremity. Typically, in the hand.
  • Slowed Movement – This is also known as Bradykinesia. Through the progression of this disease, tasks that were once simple may become increasingly difficult. Getting up from a chair, walking to the door or grabbing an item could take longer than usual. Smaller steps or dragging of the feet is common.
  • Muscle Stiffness – Having muscle stiffness can be painful and impair the range of motion. This may require physical therapy to keep a functioning range of motion and the muscles strong.
  • Lack of Posture and Balance – Parkinson’s patients have the identifiable slouch in their walk. The balance can be off due to the shuffling of feet and smaller steps being taken. This increases their risk of falling and leads back to muscle aches and stiffness.
  • Loss of Automatic Movements – As the disease progresses, there is a loss of ability to perform simple tasks that are done automatically. Blinking, smiling, moving your arms as you walk are just a few examples. There is also a change in writing. Patients can see their writing become smaller and it becomes increasingly difficult to write.
  • Change in Speech – Changes in speech are a progressive issue. Parkinson’s affects speech by usually making the patient speak with a softer tone, slurring words, or hesitation before talking, including stuttering. There could be a lack of emotion in the tone as well.

Other symptoms related to Parkinson’s are: Thinking difficulties, Depression, Swallowing Issues, Chewing or Eating Problems, Sleep Problems and Sleep Disorders, Bladder Problems, Constipation, Blood Pressure Changes, Smell Dysfunction, Fatigue, Pain, Sexual Dysfunction.

So Where Does Dehydration Come into Play?

With a decrease in overall activity, the increase in energy for activities like physical therapy cause dehydration along with the lack of sensation patients have to drink. Meaning, they do not naturally feel thirsty. Also, Parkinson’s patients take medication that increases dehydration and make it necessary for increased consumption of fluids. The recommended amount of fluid is eight 8 oz’s. On the contrary, the decrease in fluids could lead to low blood pressure or orthostatic hypotension.

Banana Bag Oral Solution provides the adequate hydration to meet the needs of Parkinson’s patients. One customer of ours has seen the effects after drinking Banana Bag Oral Solution daily over the course of a month. This is his review.

“I am a Parkinson's patient. I have to do physical therapy twice a week and I am reminded constantly to stay hydrated. I decided to try this product and wow... I now drink my Banana Bag [Oral Solution] every morning without fail. It has been a month of consistently drinking this and I have seen a difference in my overall feeling after I take it. I have increased energy and am able to function mentally better throughout the day. I worked in landscaping and tree trimming before my diagnosis and Banana Bag [Oral Solution] has given me back my ability to get out in the yard and work. This is a miracle product for patients like me and I will be letting everyone know about this. IT'S A MUST HAVE!!!”
